No Seed, No Harvest

One of my friends this week disclosed to me how he for a long time attended a church that taught the prosperity gospel. For those of you who haven’t come across it, the prosperity gospel is a doctrine preached in some churches whose basic belief is that God wants to bless His people financially, and the way to access that blessing is through giving to the church. Every week, he heard testimonies at the church about people who gave and their small businesses became huge, or their investments doubled. My friend desperately wanted to be financially blessed too, especially since at the time he had no job, no income and no savings whatsoever! This gospel sounded like a good plan; all he needed to do was give and it would come back with interest! So even though he lived on handouts, he found ways to spend very little on transport and often went without lunch so that he could give to his church. Four years later, he was not only still broke but also very frustrated! He began wondering what he could possibly doing wrong and why others were being blessed and not him.

Maybe you identify with my friend; you have been a faithful giver and wondered why God hadn’t come through for you. Or perhaps you’re the more realistic type who gives without expecting anything back in return. Or, maybe for you, giving is an inconvenience, something you do when you feel you have to or when you have extra to give. Or perhaps you’ve seen through the whole thing and you feel sympathetic for all those soft minded, gullible people who’ve been taken in by smooth talking preachers!

Which of these views is correct?

The third foundational money principle in the bible that’s very often misunderstood… ‘No Seed, No Harvest’.

Read Mal.3:10-11 ‘Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the LORD Almighty’.

Chances are that you’ve heard about tithing and maybe you’re even currently practicing it. A tithe means ‘a tenth part’ and tithing is giving 10% of any increase in wealth that comes your way to God. It is a practice that was commanded and regularly practiced in the Old Testament. According to Malachi, God promisedIsrael2 things toIsraelwhen they tithed faithfully;

  • Acceleration – God promised Israel that when they tithed, He in turn would ‘throw open the floodgates of heaven’ and pour out more blessing than they could store. What does ‘floodgates of heaven’ mean? Deut.28:12a says ‘The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands’ God’s promise was not to give the Israelites money when they tithed but to send rain on their crops! In other words, He would bless the places where they had invested.
  • Protection – v.11 reads ‘I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the LORD Almighty’ God promised that when they tithed, He would prevent pests from devouring their crops. In the KJV, he says ‘I will rebuke the devourer on your behalf’. After the farmer had labored hard to plant crops and looked after them, the devourer was the pest that would come afterwards to destroy the fruits of his labor. WhenIsrael declared dependence on God through their tithe, then God would put their crops under his protection so their work would not be in vain.

There are some who argue that the tithe was an Old Testament regulation and that with the coming of Jesus, we live in an era of grace instead. But Jesus was clear in Matt 5:17 that he did not come to abolish the law, he came to fulfill it. In fact the NT doesn’t talk about tithe but about giving sacrificially, as an act of worship, in response for what God has done for us. It certainly doesn’t stipulate a certain %. But as on old preacher once said, ‘if an Old Testament saint could give 10% of his increase under the bondage of the law, how much more should a child of God give knowing his sins are redeemed under grace!” As people who have been saved by grace, we have a lot more to be grateful to God for than they did back then.

When we tithe, we are declaring that our Provider is God, not money. When God opens the floodgates of heaven, God provides my investments with acceleration beyond expectation. This is the ‘X factor’ that helps you excel beyond your human capability. Similarly, our tithe protects us from the devourer who comes to eat into our investments.

Remember however, tithing doesn’t make us rich; it only connects us with acceleration and protection over our already existing investments! The promise is not that God will bless you with money, but that He will bless what you are already doing.

Some people ask whether saving & investing displays a lack of faith. After all, didn’t God say if we seek His kingdom that all other things will be added to us? But Prov. 6:6-8 says ‘Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.’ We must be careful not to disguise laziness with faith! Proverbs 13:11 says ‘… he who gathers money little by little makes it grow’. I believe that the biggest difference between wealthy people and poor people is that poor people eat their seed now whereas wealthy people sow or invest their seed. No Seed, No Harvest.

For many of us, a job is one of the main sources of the seeds from which wealth is propagated…. The work of a job is not to make you wealthy – it only provides the seeds for growing and multiplying wealth. It is what you do with the salary you earn from your job that determines if you will grow wealthy or remain poor! We live in a society where image is everything. Therefore, many have achieved the image at the expense of their seed. So we have people, even here at Mavuno, who look rich but in actual fact are poor. The wealthy instead focus on investing their seed and then live off what remains. Remember, ‘No Seed, No Harvest’.

  1. I loved the sermon. Thanks. I was like your friend who has given yet not been blessed.

I wish someone had taught about 10% for savings a long time ago, life would be better now.

Anyhoo, as we speak even that source of seed i don’t have. Trying to think of ways to come up with it.

These sermons have left me feeling sad for my situation.

But thanks again. All churches should preach this without a doubt to help Christians.

God bless. It’s days like these, I am proud to be a Mavunite.

PS: This new blog needs a manual & can worship session be extended. I’m not crazy about praise & worship is too short so i only come for the sermons nowadays & i am not alone. I assure you!

    Take care, God bless.

    • Hi Grateful…no need to feel bad about the situation…nothing is ever (in my opinion) Irreparable for God…no situation too grave to salvage…no time too late for us to do something about…I’m also learning I can actually start now…the source of seed is closer than we may think…there’s a guy in my hood (very inspiring) who owns an elite garage and a huge and famous laundry chain…he actually started cleaning a certain Indian restaurant’s carpet solo! his first time he went to this massive Indian restaurant, was shown the whole area he was supposed to clean, he said, ooooookkkkkk…hmmm…scanned the whole almost quarter acre ball room…went back out…got his brush… knelt down and started cleaning…the whole night! solo. All the while focussing on this one job that he was doing…long story short…he got referrals that got him referrals that got him referrals…now he owns vans that are called to clean major hotels…and his garage services Range Rovers and BMWs and the likes…you can guess who his clients are… His harvest came because He trusted God to bless his seed (His Brush, mop, e.t.c)…that seed seems so small…but his brush was his investment…the seed doesnt have to be 500,000 I think..it could be 5 cents (remember Pastor M’s money or the box?) 🙂

Basically in a nutshell…”he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness” (2 Corinthians 9: 10) and “Once these signs are fulfilled, do whatever your hand finds to do, for God is with you.” (1 Samuel 10:7)

  2. Loved This sermon to bits…haven’t been in church for a while but God spoke to me through this sermon, coz money matters are one of those things that reach our hearts more than anything else….

It’s very very easy to get lost in “the hustle” that we forget first of all that, “remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to PRODUCE wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.” (Deuteronomy 8:18)

Secondly that you cant Harvest what you havent planted…works in the spiritual and “real world” alike. And the simple truth that “God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:8)….That it’s about HIM…Investing is being a good steward of what HE has given me and sustains me to do His work…not being a servant of money or merely surviving.

Totally blessed by this message Pastor M.

  5. Hi,
Thanks for bringing out the oft omitted point that there has got to be crops or vines or something in the ground for God to bless since He says ‘I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the LORD Almighty’.

Therefore, as we tithe, we should also ensure that we are working on something for Him to bless and protect.

  9. Im currently unemployed n when i pray i always tell God to remember the tithes n offerings i gave. though i wasnt giving to get back, my thinking was that God would keep on providing a means for me to earn money. Am i right in praying like this?

I also used to give faithfully to one charity, so my prayers go like…’God send someone to help me just like u sent me to help the needy’ this is basically a desperate call for God to answer my prayers. I wonder if its wrong to pray like this.

Thank you for this sermon. Wasnt there for service. Now My prayer request is for Gods wisdom to invest wisely the seed that i have

  10. Hello Pastor M.

I did not come to church on Sunday but a friend of mine referred me to this blog as we discussing “prosperity preaching”. Actually recently I am ever more incensed by pastor’s focus on this and In my opinion, derail us more and more from God. I am writing this because my friend promised me that you would engage me. I am not sure if this is the right forum, but I hope you will direct me otherwise if not.

I have read the sermon and would appreciate a few clarifications and answers:
    – what is a seed
    – In interpreting Malachi, …If god will bless what we do… wont God bless the work of our hands; isn’t the blessing of the lands similar to the blessing of our work? or is it confined to investments?
    – What do you mean by “…I believe that the biggest difference between wealthy people and poor people is that poor people eat their seed now whereas wealthy people sow or invest their seed.”
    – what is your opinion on this comment “…money matters are one of those things that reach our hearts more than anything else…”
    – What is our purpose in life?
    – What could lead us to hell?

The idea is to understand your philosophy.

I was watching a famous pastor preaching on TV on 11th September and he was preaching about prayers, and how prayers would make you prosperous. In particular this statement really ticked me off: “…Its prayers like… that will move you from a slum in Kibera to a home in… (either Kileleshwa or Runda)”. Well, this is to give you an basis of where I come from (understanding). Do we live to be rich?

    Thank you.

  13. Hi Pastor M., New to this blog. Thanks for the really thought-provoking material. Saving and wise stewardship is surely a Godly thing to do, just so long as the life purpose/priority/passion is kingdom building. I particularly like your quote – “if an Old Testament saint could give 10% of his increase under the bondage of the law, how much more should a child of God give knowing his sins are redeemed under grace!” That has got to be really key to the whole thing. The Gospel of the Son of God crucified in my place is the deepest, most powerful motivation to giving. When I realise that I have been bought at enormous cost, I am not my own but I live for him who died for me – then I’m not giving in order to get a blessing/increase – I’m giving because I am already massively blessed in Christ, saved from hell for eternal friendship with my glorious Saviour. I might die poor and afflicted in this life – as did Jesus or the Apostle Paul – but I have stored up for me perfect fellowship with Jesus in the New Creation, perfect provision, accleration and protection for eternity.

  14. Bubbling over Says:

Hi Pastor M……Lovely sermon and great message. Now lets get to something slightly more pertinent. I bring my child to church.

Why do I do that?To have her grow in Christian values in an environment where the love of God is present for all. I am getting extremely irritated that the “merchants” have set up in Gods Holy Sanctuary.
I am talking about the Candy Floss and Pop Corn stands. The bouncing castles set up at the front entrance. As well as the greenhouse.

Why should the church set me up for a fight with my child about junk food that now seems to be everywhere.Sugar in all forms.Or to fork out on jumping castles and other entertainment and leave my child with a sense of being deprived.

I am not against having wholesome food being available for children or adults. It gives us all time for fellowship.
This one goes to the church leadership…what are we and what are we about? Lets get back to our core values. We are not the circus or the fair-ground.Lets look for more innovative ways of doing things to entertain our children if that’s what we are up to.

  15. Hey, i just discovered something. In malachi where tihing is discussed the scripture says that we should put God to TEST n see whether He will not open the heavens to bless us……Doesnt this mean we should give tithe expecting blessings??Its an act of testing, ama? Id be lyeing if i said i give my tithes without expectation.

I really appreciate this blog since im not able to attend service. I learn new things everytime i listen to topics about Money in Mavuno. Thank you Pastor M and the entire Mavuno team for the great work youre doing. God bless you!
