The Opposite Of Hating

1 Chronicles 11:15-19 tells of a time during a very difficult war when the going was very tough. At such times, soldiers longingly remember the life they left behind, and David longingly remembered the sweet, cool water that came from a well at the gate of the occupied town of Bethlehem.

Very matter-of-factly, the passage describes a daring military operation, where three warriors ‘broke through’ the enemy ranks (note: they didn’t ‘steal through’) and broke back on the way back to bring the coveted water to David, their commander-in-chief. They risked their lives for him!

Now, the focus of this passage is not David’s honorable response, which was to refuse to drink water that could have cost his men their lives, but the action of the mighty men. It’s easy to know you should honor your God-given authorities. But honor is not just words; it’s positive action!

Today I want to share three important actions we can engage in to honor those who God has called to lead us.

1. PRAY FOR YOUR LEADERS – 1 Tim.2:1-2I urge then, that requests, prayers and intercession & thanksgiving be made for everyone in authority that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness’. Continued prayer is the greatest form of loyalty and support you can give to your leaders. In doing so you remember that they are human and no leader can make it on their own without God’s help and the good will of those that follow them.

When was the last time you prayed for our president/parliament? When was the last time you prayed for your boss/pastors? Don’t you realize that when they succeed, you succeed?

Often times, many leaders, including pastors, are often lonely and isolated. They are cheered or jeered according to their performance and are vulnerable to attacks from the enemy. Many pastors pray for and agonize before God for their people but who prays for and agonizes before God for them? It’s like the disciples, led and loved by Jesus for three years and yet could not even stay up one hour to pray with him before his death!’ Honor is not just words; it’s positive action!

2. AFFIRM YOUR LEADERS Last week we saw how Moses was dishonored by Aaron & Miriam even though he was the humblest person on earth. But he was in good company here. Jesus himself in Mk.6:1-6 was honored everywhere else but his own hometown! He could not even do miracles among them because of their unbelief! It is sad to see the greatest leader of all time reduced to having to prove himself to those who should’ve appreciated him the most.

Don’t leave it to the world to talk about your leaders! Don’t let them be appreciated whenever they travel but be unrecognized at home. Be known as a people that is proud of your leaders and expresses it! And speak well not just of your leaders (in their absence) but also to them. I’m sure if any of your pastors died, you would want to say great things about the impact they have had on your life. Why wait till the funeral? (Isn’t that what we did for Prof. Wangari Maathai?) Tell them now! I still keep cards/encouraging notes that people sent me a long time back. And don’t just do it once; tell them regularly! Honor is not just words; it’s positive action!

3. BLESS YOUR LEADERS Mat.10:41 ‘Anyone who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and anyone who receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward.’ There is a blessing promised for those who go an extra mile for those who are their spiritual authorities; a prophet’s reward that comes from joyfully blessing your leaders.

David’s mighty men were not sycophants but heroes in their own right. But they risked their own lives to bless their leader. Like David’s mighty men, I believe God is calling us to begin a lifestyle of blessing those who lead us. Gal.6:6 ‘Anyone who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor’ 1 Cor.9:1-2 ‘Are you not the result of my work in the Lord? Even though I may not be an apostle to others, surely I am to you! For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord… v.11 if we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you?’ Strong words from Paul! Many receive great blessings each week but few return to bless the bless-er.

CHALLENGE: Let me end with a challenge: What if we could each commit to a 30 days #HatersNoMore challenge? Even though it doesn’t come naturally, plan to practice these actions of honor on those who lead you. Your boss, your national leaders, your pastor, your husband etc [Perhaps some of you need to commit to honor your parents by saying something to them or writing a letter; not even because of how they’ve treated you but because they are your parents and thus worthy of your honor; some of you need to bless them financially – maybe you’ve been supporting them out of obligation but this will be different…]

Would you commit to this? Please write your experiences as you do this on the blog!

  1. Profound! Taking up this challenge, never mind the fact that as soon as this sermon series began,I realised how wrong I was towards my leaders, not so much in action but thoughts! Later they proved to be harder to deal with as David to Saul,Oh how I needed to hear this! Asante!

  3. Pastor M, what of when you are the leader without honor? What then? (Just like Pastor Oscar) what do you do then? I am one such person and struggling to deal with no honour and would like to know my response…

    • @Andy, I feel you! You’re in good company, along with Moses, Jesus & Paul in the bible! My encouragement to you is to lead diligently (Romans 12:8) and graciously, working as if for God and not man (Colosians 3:23). Also honor those in authority over you and pray as you do so that God will vindicate you before those you lead as He did for Joshua in Joshua 4:14

I have had a strained albeit estranged relationship with my mother and we haven’t spoken for a year….does it bother me ?Yes it does….very much….i will purpose to make amends within the next 30 days….i have to…i must….because i wouldn’t want to be in the same position as a mother of a 19 year old daughter myself…it would hurt me so much…i therefore want to identify with the pain she is going through…..I WILL PRAY FOR HER,AFFIRM HER AND BLESS HER…….

  9. Pray for Your Pastor Says:

“Pray…that…words may be given me.” Eph 6:19 NIV
Paul wrote to the believers in Ephesus: “Pray…that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me…that I will fearlessly make known…the gospel.” Do you pray for your pastor? You should! After Wilbur Chapman’s first sermon at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, a man said, “You’re pretty young to be pastor of this great church. We’ve always had older men. I’m afraid you won’t succeed, but since you preach the gospel I’m going to help you all I can.” Chapman thought, “What a crank.” But the man continued, “I’m going to pray for you, and a few others have covenanted to join me.” Later, Chapman wrote, “I didn’t feel so bad when I learned that they were going to pray for me. Soon the three became fifty, and the fifty became two hundred who met before every service to pray for me. In another room eighteen elders knelt so closely around me that I could put out my hand and touch them. I always went into my pulpit confident that I would have God’s anointing in answer to the prayers of those people. It was easy to preach—a real joy. And what was the result? Eleven hundred people were saved and joined the church in the next three years, and six hundred of them were men. It was the fruit of the Holy Spirit in answer to prayer. Church members have much more to do than go to church as curious, idle spectators to be amused and entertained. It is their business to pray mightily that the Holy Spirit will clothe the preacher with power and make his words like dynamite.”

  10. I must say this has been one of the hardest sermons for me but im willing to take up the challenge of Haters No More for 30days. However my question is like Andy’s above what if the leader has no honour? especially a church leader.. what then? and how do you deal with been dissapointed to get to a point where you can pray for church leaders and honour them?
Im really greatful for the sermon though, it was very timely for me.

    • @Hilda, sermon #2 ‘The Leaders We Deserve’ talked about an amazing leader called David who honored a leader who had no honor. Maybe a good place is to start by praying for yourself, that God will give you the grace to honor your leaders, not because of who they are but because of who God is. Praying for huge transformation over the next 30 days!

    • Praying for much grace. Start with praying for ideas of positive actions to do for them and then step out in faith. Don’t wait to feel good about it before you act – feelings follow obedience!

  15. Thank you so much Pastor M for the wonderful message. I wont say that am the most prayerful person yet but every time i go on my knees i remember to pray for our political and spiritual leaders. I used to do this out of obligation but now i know the importance of praying for them. Imagine a world with no leaders, its actually unimaginable. This is an eye opener and i pray that The almighty Heavenly Father gives u strength and continue using you and the other pastors for the good work your doing. Be blessed.

  16. As pastor M said on Twitter, it wouldn’t be a challenge if it was easy. This 30-day challenge couldn’t have began at a better time; what with Kenya Power frustrations galore following the heavy rains and the revelation of a Minister’s PA giving verbal instructions to render hundreds of Kenyans homeless at Syokimau. The blood boils and plenty of adjectives come to mind. While it is not lost to me that incompetent leadership must not be tolerated, I am working hard not to look at all Govt leaders and public servants thro the lenses of that 1 PA or the parastatal head that uses that 1 phone call to cause untold misery. God help me and the rest of us that have committed to this and may we honour Him as we change our attitude and that of people around us.

  21. Hi Pastor M,
Implementing this sermon series, walking the talk is hard for everyone who has taken up the 30 day challenge and even those who are trying to honour their leaders – without taking the 30 day challenge, as you can tell from the feedback on social media.

I have a couple of question though:

As we appreciate our leaders is there a place to hold our leaders to account and when needed to rebuke them. Like what happened with David & Saul. As well how do we hold each other to account or rebuke each other.

A practical situation Pastor M, when we drive on the side walks or medians on our newly built roads (not just PSV’s and personal cars but even law enforcement) do we just sit idly by and say is not my problem or do we actively do something about it?

Another one: when we buy land and build our houses meters from the edge of an active runway (Eastleigh) should we be supported and compensated or corrected and rebuked? When we blame government and local authorities for not stopping us or destroying our property – who is going to rebuke us for doing the wrong thing in the first place?

I continue to pray for you and the church leadership as you teach us this message especially at this time when the message is contrary to the current spirit of public sentiment in the nation.

  22. Walalalal is it that i am being tested during this Haters No More challenge or what???? I am waiting for a matatu and I hear this lady speaking of how men are all stupid because a night guard was doing his job… The anger I felt for that statement.. salalalal.. so i told her she can’t say that and there was this and that but anyway I believe she got the point…

No sooner had I finished than my boss calls me and I have to get back to the office.. angry doesn’t begin to describe anything I felt especially since I had done what she needed to a T and she was shouting at me from the comfort of wherever she was and I was at KNH waiting for a matatu for over an hour….I know I need to pray for authority and honor them but this one will be one of my biggest challenges.. my boss… the govt big deal.. i don’t sit with them in an office every now and then..Let’s just say for my boss i will need serious grace…

I am trying to woosaa and get back to the right side of life lakini leo imekuwa hard…. and all this in a span of like an hour.. sigh….

  23. I have found due to the blessing of a great leader and great parents, it is relatively easy to honour. I have found it harder to honour the security guard, the traffic police etc. This Monday as I entered one the malls my attitude towards the guards searching me was bad and it came out in how you I hand my bag etc to him. On Wednesday I felt compelled to go back, apologize and bless him. I stood for 10minutes think of reasons to walk away but apologize and bless I did. A blessing to both of us. My breakthrough

  24. So this is my day 10 of the #HatersNoMore Challenge. By day 2 I didn’t think I would hack this challenge. It got so hard especially coz work got a tad bit crazier, but the more I challenge myself, the easier it is. Lately work is crazier than it has ever been but the peace in my heart and the joy I have is only from God. Now I even catch myself when I wanna complain on the inside. Glad I took up the challenge.
