Spreading the Love

What is something friends are hesitant/embarrassed to talk about? Bad breath, Personal sex lives, Uncomfortable family circumstances, Boyfriends and girlfriends? I sometimes fear to talk about my church and bringing people there. There was a time when I was with a group of friends and I invited this friend of mine to come to church and they responded honestly but in a way that really left me feeling rejected and cut to pieces.

There are many fears we have but of all fears that we have, the greatest is the fear of rejection. Rejection is painful, uncomfortable, wounding, funny/hilarious in a sick sort of way. When you have experienced rejection you never want to go there again. They say “once bitten, twice shy”.

Read: 1 John 4:16b-18

The problem with fear is that it makes us live a safe Christianity, that never tries anything new or bold, or creative or meaningful. It results in a mediocre quality of faith that is too afraid to amount to anything.

I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that – Every time we take a step and ask someone for something – we have a 50% chance of success or failure. In life we will experience challenges and even failures. Its official; Jesus said it John 16:33. The good news is that – there is a solution for fear, especially the fear of rejection. God’s solution is love. But Like Tina Turner you may ask – what’s love got to do with it?

Jesus himself talked about and even faced rejection when he gathered with others. Jesus himself talked about and even faced rejection when he gathered with others.Jesus gave a parable about the great party God is calling for his people in Matthew 22. He said, that regardless of how good the party will be, there will be those who will reject the invitation! He was called a glutton and friend of sinners [Matthew 11:19, Luke 7:34] . For attending houseparties and hooking up with Pharisees like Simon and Joseph, tax collectors like Matthew and Zacheus, and weird people like the woman at the well and Mary Magdalene. He was betrayed over the last supper by his friends. He was crucified at the call of the crowds some of whom he must have fed when he fed the 5000 and the 4000. He continues to face rejection every time he invites us to make a decision for him and we postpone or refuse his offer.

v18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

Our passage in 1 John 4:16b-18 teaches me this important truth, that: Deepening my faith involves overcoming fear with God’s love in my life.

  1. Fearless Love (v.17) God’s love gives confidence. When we are in God’s love then we have an assurance. We can therefore be bold and courageous to go back to those places where we are likely to face rejection. I can overcome fear by accepting God’s love which gives confidence.
  2. Fear-free love (v.18) There’s no fear in God’s kind of love. The nature of God’s love is that it is not contaminated with fear. It is perfect. It is not tainted with fear. I can overcome fear by accepting God’s love which is not tainted with fear.
  3. Fear-chasing love (v.18) Not only is God’s love fear free it drives out fear. When we submit ourselves to God and allow him to influence our motives as well as our actions then our fear is addressed.I can overcome fear by accepting God’s love which has the power to drive out fear.

Deepening our love involves overcoming fear with God’s love. Once bitten, twice loving.

Be prepared for rejection. Be more eager for transformation!

Next week we have a closing bash – salsa night at Mavuno on Saturday!
